Big Bluestem Grass
(Andropogon gerardi)
This warm season perennial bunch grass is the dominant grass in the tallgrass prairie. It will attain a height of up to 8 feet and is planted for its blue-green to green color in the summer and reddish purple color in the fall. In late August, it produces a three part seed head that resembles a turkey foot. It thrives in a wide range of soils including wet and poorly drained clay.
